This is a very exciting day at Stacies house! She has been letting her hen sit on some eggs for 20 days and this weekend three chicks hatched. She has been keeping a close eye on another egg that has been sitting since April 2 and should be hatching any day. Well when she went out today to check it had cracked and was starting to chirp and open. What an amazing thing to watch! The mama hen was pecking at it to help it open and trying to keep the others close by! What a fun event for children to see.
Starting to emerge!
If you look in the lower left corner you can see the chicks head poking out!
And of course a video to capture it all in "Urban Acre" style.
If you would like to hatch chicks but don't have hens or roosters??? Incubating your own is a great way to involve the kids and we have had great success. Finding someone who has fertilized eggs is the only catch. Maybe Stacie can sell you some! Also, what will you do with them once they've hatched and grown up??? Here is a step-by-step guide if you are interested. A great science project.
